Way to Learn Faster

Learning new things is a huge part of life -- we should always be striving to learn and grow. But it takes time, and time is precious. So how can you make the most of your time by speeding up the learning process? we now have a better understanding of how we learn and the most effective ways our brains process and hold on to information.

If you want to get a jump start on expanding your knowledge, here are 10 proven ways you can start learning faster today.

1. Take notes with pen and paper.

Though it might seem that typing your notes on a laptop during a conference or lecture will be more thorough, thus helping you learn faster, it doesn’t work that way. To speed up your learning, skip the laptop and take notes the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper. Research has shown that those who type in their lecture notes process and retain the information at a lower level. Those who take notes by hand actually learn more.

While taking notes by hand is slower and more cumbersome than typing, the act of writing out the information fosters comprehension and retention. Reframing the information in your own words helps you retain the information longer, meaning you’ll have better recall and will perform better on tests.

2. Have effective note-taking skills.

The better your notes are, the faster you’ll learn. Knowing how to take thorough and accurate notes will help you remember concepts, gain a deeper understanding of the topic and develop meaningful learning skills. So, before you learn a new topic, make sure you learn different strategies for note taking.

Whatever method you use, some basic tips for note taking include:

Listen and take notes in your own words.

Leave spaces and lines between main ideas so you can revisit them later and add information.

Develop a consistent system of abbreviations and symbols to save time.

Write in phrases, not complete sentences.

Learn to pull out important information and ignore trivial information.

3. Distributed practice.

The first step is to take thorough notes while the topic is being discussed. Afterward, take a few minutes to look over your notes, making any additions or changes to add detail and ensure accuracy.

Do this quickly, once or twice following each class or period of instruction. Over time, you can begin to spread the sessions out, starting with once per day and eventually moving to three times a week. Spacing out practice over a longer period of time is highly effective, because it’s easier to do small study sessions and you’ll stay motivated to keep learning.

4. Study, sleep, more study.

You have a big project or a major presentation tomorrow and you’re not prepared. If you’re like many of us, you stay up too late trying to cram beforehand. Surely your hard work will be rewarded, even if you’re exhausted the next day… right? However, that’s not the most efficient way for our brains to process information.

Research shows a strong connection between sleep and learning. It seems that getting some shut-eye is an important element in bolstering how our brains remember something. Deep sleep (non-rapid-eye-movement sleep) can strengthen memories if the sleep occurs within 12 hours of learning the new information. And students who both study and get plenty of sleep not only perform better academically; they’re also happier.

5. Modify your practice.

If you're learning a skill, don’t do the same thing over and over. Making slight changes during repeated practice sessions will help you master a skill faster than doing it the same way every time. In one study of people who learned a computer-based motor skill, those who learned a skill and then had a modified practice session where they practiced the skill in a slightly different way performed better than those who repeated the original task over and over.

6. Try a mnemonic device.

One of the best ways to memorize a large amount of information quickly is to use a mnemonic device: a pattern of letters, sounds or other associations that assist in learning something. One of the most popular mnemonic devices is one we learned in kindergarten -- the alphabet song. This song helps children remember their “ABCs,” and it remains deeply ingrained in our memory as adults.

Mnemonics help you simplify, summarize and compress information to make it easier to learn. It can be really handy for students in medical school or law school, or people studying a new language. So, if you need to memorize and store large amounts of new information, try a mnemonic and you’ll find you remember the information long past your test.

7. Use brain breaks to restore focus.

Information overload is a real thing. In order to learn something new, our brains must send signals to our sensory receptors to save the new information, but stress and overload will prevent your brain from effectively processing and storing information.

When we are confused, anxious or feeling overwhelmed, our brains effectively shut down. You can see this happen when students listening to long, detailed lectures “zone out” and stop paying attention to what’s being said.

They simply aren’t able to effectively conduct that information into their memory banks, so learning shuts down. The best way to combat this is by taking a “brain break,” or simply shifting your activity to focus on something new. Even a five-minute break can relieve brain fatigue and help you refocus.

8. Stay hydrated.

We know we should drink water because it’s good for us -- it’s good for our skin and our immune system, and it keeps our body functioning optimally. But staying hydrated is also key to our cognitive abilities. Drinking water can actually make us smarter. According to one study, students who took water with them to an examination room performed better than those who didn’t.

Dehydration, on the other hand, can seriously affect our mental function. When you fail to drink water, your brain has to work harder than usual.

9. Learn information in multiple ways.

When you use multiple ways to learn something, you’ll use more regions of the brain to store information about that subject. This makes that information more interconnected and embedded in your brain. It basically creates a redundancy of knowledge within your mind, helping you truly learn the information and not just memorize it.

You can do this by using different media to stimulate different parts of the brain, such as reading notes, reading the textbook, watching a video and listening to a podcast or audio file on the topic. The more resources you use, the faster you’ll learn.

10. Connect what you learn with something you know.

The more you can relate new concepts to ideas that you already understand, the faster the you’ll learn the new information. According to the book Make It Stick, many common study habits are counterproductive. They may create an illusion of mastery, but the information quickly fades from our minds.

Memory plays a central role in our ability to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as applying knowledge to problems we haven’t encountered before and drawing inferences from facts already known. By finding ways to fit new information in with preexisting knowledge, you’ll find additional layers of meaning in the new material. This will help you fundamentally understand it better, and you’ll be able to recall it more accurately.

Potential And Goal

Potential and  Goal

Becoming your best self is part attitude and part strategy. I can’t help you with attitude, because that comes from within. But I can offer tips on how to unlock your potential and reach your goals.

1.Focus on your strengths.
This is really simple: You’re good at some stuff. You are not-so-good at other stuff. Focus on the stuff you’re good at. Where you are naturally good, you have the potential to become great if you put time into developing those talents. Conversely, if you get too wrapped up in worrying about your weaknesses, you’re probably wasting time and energy.

2.Focus on today.
One of my favorite sayings is, “Yesterday ended last night.” It doesn’t matter whether yesterday was good or bad. It’s over. Don’t get stuck there. For that matter, don’t think too much about the future, either. You can’t change the past; you can’t mold the future. But you can influence what happens right now. Give the present day your full attention and best effort.

3.Focus on your priorities.
Protect your calendar! Your daily agenda can be turned upside down by others and the many requests they send your way. Be selective about what you do because you can’t do it all. As the late motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said, “Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have 24-hour days.” Choose your priorities and use your time to accomplish them.

4.Focus on your results.
It’s easy to become tired or frustrated when the work is hard and the journey long. If you start feeling aimless, make like a 4-year-old and pester yourself with questions. What am I working toward? Why am I trying to achieve it? Why does it matter? Reminding yourself of your purpose will keep you focused on the big picture, and your drive to succeed will triumph over adversity.

5.Focus on your contribution.
The best version of you will emerge when you decide to use your potential to make the world a better place. As author Steve Maraboli says, “You were put on this earth to achieve your greatest self…. Do it courageously.” Improve yourself and improve your world.

Mental Map and Meaning Marker

Mental Map and Meaning Marker

Whether you realize it or not, right now your brain is using a map. Powerful, yet usually hidden, mental maps are what guide your actions anytime you make a decision, face a challenge or set a goal. Your mental map is what helps you spot the most useful opportunities, seize the most valuable resources and chart the best route toward your goals.

But not all mental maps are created equal. If the mental map you’re using lacks “meaning markers,” it is incomplete, inaccurate and can lead you astray. Meaning markers are the things in your life that matter to you—career advancement, a new business, your kid’s admission to a desired school, better health, Earning money and so on.

If you’re currently finding your work less meaningful, your obstacles less surmountable or your goals less attainable, chances are you need to redraw your mental map.

In my research, I’ve found there are several common mistakes we make when drawing the mental maps that guide our daily decisions and actions. Sometimes we haven’t highlighted enough meaning markers. Sometimes we’ve highlighted the wrong ones and chosen a path studded with negatives rather than the things we truly care about. And all too often, we map escape routes before we even begin looking at paths for success.

Here are three ways you can improve your mental mapping:

1. Highlight your true meaning markers.

The best mental map is one with paths that steer us toward accomplishing meaningful goals. But we can’t chart those paths until we’ve identified and mapped the things in life that matter to us most. Think hard about what you find most engaging during your day, what brings you joy and what you hope to accomplish and achieve. If you could wave a magic wand, what’s the one thing you’d change about your life? These questions will help you find your true meaning markers.

2. Reorient your mental map.

Every mental map has a focal point that dictates where the majority of your brain’s resources will be allocated. Reorient this map around the meaning markers you identified in step one. Shift your mindset so that you’re focused on the area of your life you want to change, whether it’s raising your revenues, improving your writing skills or building stronger interpersonal connections.

3. Map success routes before escape routes.

What you focus on becomes your reality. If you’re focused on avoiding routes to failure, you will completely miss the roads to success.

Time is Now

Time is Now

In every day, there are 1,440 minutes. That means we have 1,440 daily opportunities to make a positive impact. Unfortunately, far too many people are allowing those opportunities to slip away without ever noticing them. Why? Because they either burn out, Before they know it, minutes have turned into hours, hours into days, days into months, and months into years of lost chances.

Fortunately, there are solutions that will help you crown every day with that “first day” freshness, enthusiasm and determination.

Just for a moment, think back on some of the finest “first days” you’ve had in life; your first day on any job, at a new school, in a budding relationship. You could feel that adrenaline rush as you surveyed new opportunities and savored every magical moment. Your passion was to be the best and brightest and you made every effort to remember key details. You looked for opportunities to shine and be innovative. Unfortunately, as time passed, you may have lost some of your jump-start enthusiasm. Boredom replaced energy; clutter replaced fresh ideas and humdrum routines replaced creativity.

How do you rekindle and keep that “first day” focus and enthusiasm? Consider these solutions:

1.Remember, every day is a gift to you.

The best gifts are those we not only cherish but put to use. Each day is a gift filled with opportunities to rise above fear, self-doubt and mediocrity to fulfill our purpose. Make each day count by setting specific goals to succeed, then putting forth every effort to exceed your own expectations.

2.Use the power you already have.

We were all born with a certain degree of power. The key to success is discovering this innate power and using it daily to deal with whatever challenges come our way. Don’t wait for others to open doors for you. People in the most-dire circumstances have found innovative ways to open doors to freedom, education and business success by creating their own force fields. Make a conscious effort to find your power source, use it to fuel your passion, and release the greatness within you.

3.Stay alert.

When you ignore new opportunities, you open the door to boredom, resulting in complacency and lack of growth. Open your eyes and see yourself as a go-getter with the power to turn “no” into a “yes.” Be determined to blaze trails that will take you where no one has gone before.

4.Determination finds many ways to succeed.

Many people become discouraged when they encounter difficulty in reaching their goals. However, most highly successful people didn’t reach their goals without obstacles. Their golden achievements came only after having doors closed in their faces, dreams derailed by mistakes and setbacks, and constantly telling them they weren’t good enough. However, the difference between those who have won and those who have thrown up their hands in defeat is often in the level of persistence. In tough times, the winners have drawn on that incredible resolve every human being possesses and stood firm against the odds. If you encounter a roadblock, think of a dozen ways to get around it and take action. Remember, there’s more than one road to success.

5.Improve yourself constantly.

As the global marketplace changes, we must stay abreast of what’s going on, and constantly improve our knowledge and skills to meet demands. Each day, make a commitment to be better, more knowledgeable, and more in touch than you were yesterday. Periodically enroll in classes or access self-help toolkits that will help you to improve yourself.

6.Actions for today and tomorrow.

Going forward, here are three steps to take in the next 48 hours that will help you treat each day like your first day in business:  At the end of each day, keep a journal of your accomplishments for that day and the things you need to improve. Pat yourself on the back for your good points and make immediate plans to improve any weaknesses you note. This will help you to stay focused on your goals and what you need to do to reach them.

As you begin each workday, see yourself as a true champion. Visualize yourself speaking positively and confidently, walking or sitting with good posture, remembering names and details, and receiving praise and rewards for your efforts.

Keep a highly visible plaque, picture or inspiring quote in your workplace that reminds you of your purpose and why your work is important. It should be a visual so powerful that it will inspire you each time you see it. This reminder will help you to maintain that fresh “first day” focus.

Stress and Negative Emotions

Stress and negative emotions are a natural part of life. The problem comes when those emotions start getting in the way of your lifestyle and success.

If you find yourself in a bad mood, it’s important to have a go-to strategy to put yourself in a better headspace. To help you, we asked members of the Young Entrepreneur Council to recommend small, actionable ways to boost your mood in less than 10 minutes.

Try one of these tips the next time..

1. Take a deep breath.

A slow, deep breath—a six-second inhale and six-second exhale—sends a signal to your entire body to relax by forcing you to be present. The best part? You can do it anytime and anywhere,Try it out and you will see how much your overall mood improves.

2. Write in your journal.

Research in positive psychology demonstrates that writing your thoughts with pen and paper.

3.  Reflect on what you’re thankful for.

It’s easy to always want more. Entrepreneurs especially get caught up in hitting ambitious goals, achieving faster growth and outperforming the competition and sometimes rarely take the time to just stop and be thankful for everything they’ve accomplished. Practicing gratitude helps people regain perspective and appreciation, knowing that they’ve been blessed with the success they’ve had so far and the success they’ll continue to have.

4. Watch something funny.

When you start to feel stressed, tired or down, it is likely a sign you need to disconnect and take a break. When this happens to me, I turn to comedy. Put on your favorite comedian, show or Movie and simply sit back and enjoy it. Chances are whatever is causing you to be down is not heavy enough to keep you from smiling or laughing. This process will immediately lift your spirits and act as an easy reset button.

5. Work outside.

One way to instantly boost your mood, relieve stress and deepen your thinking is to work outside. Relocating outdoors, even if just for a task or two, removes you from the artificial office setting and florescent lights and allows you to gaze at the sky and trees and breathe in fresh air during those brief gaps in working.

6. Take a coffee or tea break.

It may sound simple, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stepped away to sip a cup of coffee or iced tea when I’m stressed and then come back in a much better mood. Not only will your mood improve, but the caffeine can help fight headaches, relieve sinus pressure and give you some much-needed energy to make it through the rest of the day.

7. Strike a power pose.

One can control their mind with their body. According to some estimates, holding a power pose has been found to decrease cortisol (responsible for stress), which in return increases confidence and changes in mood. So, if you’re stressed out because of a job interview, business meeting, presentation, etc., find a quiet place and stretch out your arms and open your chest.

8. Do a short exercise

It is proven that having an exercise routine or simply walking every day makes us happier and puts us in a good mood. This is very important because when we get back to our daily work tasks, our productivity will be affected and enhanced, in this case with good vibes. Focus on the well-being of your body, and your mind will be balanced as well.

9. Meditate.

Meditation is effective even if it’s done for just a few minutes. All you need to do is spend some time with your eyes closed or just unfocused. Take deep breaths and follow the breath as it moves through your body. What this does is it ties your attention to your body and the sensations happening now. Spend 10 minutes this way and you’ll be pretty amazed at how good you feel after.

10. Call a friend.

If you’re having a bad day or moment, it doesn’t hurt to phone up a friend. You don’t even have to discuss what’s bothering you if your mood is severely affected in the moment. Instead, you can talk about something completely unrelated to help you get your mind off it and cool down. Friends are our support systems and it’s important to lean to them when we need help.
